Description:

The ductus arteriosus is an integral part of the normal fetal circulation allowing blood to bypass the fetal heart in utero. Failure of the ductus to close at birth can lead to a variety of clinical presentations depending on the duration, size, and co-existing congenital abnormalities. PDA accounts for 10% of congenital heart defects but is relatively rare in adults.
