Description:

Syncope is a relatively common occurrence in the general population and can represent a benign vaso-vagal response or a life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia or other severe cardiac condition. Because of the broad differential diagnosis, the evaluation and management of the patient can be time-consuming and complex.

Note: This course is eligible for ACPE credit.

You Will Learn

  • To enumerate an effective differential diagnosis of syncope and its underlying causes.
  • To define an appropriate assessment for the patient presenting with syncope.
  • To list high-risk findings associated with syncope that suggest a cardiac cause.

Method and medium:

Amy West Pollak, MD

Amy West Pollak, MD, previously at UVa, was awarded one of two 2012 Young Author Achievement Awards in JACC CV Imaging, for her paper “Arterial spin labeling MRI reproducibly measures peak-exercise calf muscle perfusion in peripheral arterial disease,” published December 2012.  Dr. West Pollak is currently on staff at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
